Dandruff is a common chronic scalp condition marked by flaking of the dead skin from the scalp. Normally skin of the scalp dies and flakes off in a month but in those suffering from Dandruff, this happens every 2-7 days. The condition may worsen during the fall and winter when indoor heating can contribute to dry skin and improve during the summer.
In Ayurveda, problem of dandruff under in the category of Shudra Roga, Dandruff caused due to an imbalance of all three doshas (vat,pitta,kapha dosha). The primary doshas involved are Pitta and Vata. In an aggravated state, both doshas cause production of Ama, which are dry and heating in nature. These AMA accumulate in the deep tissues of scalp and contaminate skin. Contamination of the deep tissues of scalp and cause itching and patches on scalp. Due to this ama, the scalp sheds larger and which leads to the problem of dandruff.
The Ayurvedic line of treatment is to generally pacify Pitta and Vata by herbal medicines as well as balanced diet and lifestyle plan.
Symptoms:
- Appearance of white flakes on scalp
- Dryness of scalp
- Redness and Softness of the scalp skin
- Continuous itchy feeling on the scalp
Causes:
Dandruff can be caused by a number of things, including dry skin; sensitivity to hair products like certain fabrics, soaps, shampoos; certain types of food like spicy sour and oily food ,environmental allergens such as dust, cobwebs, sunlight, and skin disorder such as psoriasis, seborrhea dermatitis, or eczema. Excessive cosmetic hair treatments such as hair conditioning and hair coloring, bonding often result in a weak skin and eventually lead to dandruff.
The overgrowth of yeast can also cause dandruff. This overgrowth can be caused by stress, hormones, too much oil on the scalp, or problems with the immune system.
Ayurvedic Medicine for Fever, Diet & Lifestyle:
- In general, daily cleansing with a gentle shampoo to reduce oiliness and skin cell buildup can often help mild dandruff.
- Massage your scalp with Mahabhringraj oil every time before washing the hair.
- Avoid spicy, greasy, hot and penetrating foods, junk food, and aerated drinks.
- Taken food with good nutritive value; include fiber-rich foods, salads, fruits, sprouts wheat and lentils.
- Do regular yoga and exercises to minimize stress levels.
Home Remedy:
- Mix 1 teaspoon lemon juice, 1 tablespoon mustard oil and 1 cup yogurt. Apply this to the hair for 20-25 minutes to 90 minute before washing the hair.
shodhit gandhak mixed with mustard oil and apply on scalp at night before washing hair.
