Hypertension

 

Introduction: Hypertension is a long-standing high blood pressure.1 out of 3 adults suffers from it and 1 out of 10 deaths are due to hypertension. For a young adult, systolic blood pressure of more than 130mm of Hg and diastolic blood pressure of more than 80 qualifies for hypertension whereas for a person of more than 60 years of age,  blood pressure of more than 140/90 is considered as hypertension.

 

Risk factors:  Important causes include sedentary lifestyle, obesity, diabetes mellitus, smoking, alcohol, inactivity, stress, kidney disease and endocrine diseases. Some genes are predisposed to hypertension and therefore are more common in some families. 

 

Symptoms: Long standing hypertension generally does not include many symptoms but can cause slow organ damage. Hypertension is one of the the most common causes for a heart attack, brain hemorrhage, paralysis, kidney failure, vision loss, memory loss and heart failure. Sometimes acute rise in blood pressure may cause headache, vomiting, dizziness, nasal bleeding and vision loss.

 

Prevention:

1.      Maintain normal body weight (BMI <25)

2.      Reduce salt intake (<6gm/ day)

3.      Regular exercise (30min per day and at least 5 days a week)

4.      Reduce alcohol and smoking.

 

Treatment :

1. Baidyanath Amla juice 2tsp with glass of water on empty stomach.

2. Baidyanath Sarpagandha vati 1tab twice a day before meals.
