5. Chronic laryngitis (SWERBHED i.e. voice breaking)

Laryngitis is an inflammation of vocal cords (larynx). Larynx is two folds of mucous membrane covering muscle and cartilage. Normally vocal cords open and close smoothly, forming sounds through their movement and vibration. Laryngitis that lasts longer than three weeks or repeated attacks of acute laryngitis is known as chronic laryngitis.chronic laryngitis has been called SWERBHED in Ayurveda.

In AYURVED, chronic laryngitis is various types

1. Vataj swarabhed is marked by loud, vibrating voice and pain around the larynx.

2. Pittaj swarabhed is indicated by thirst, fever and burning sensation in the laryngeal region.

3. Kaphaj swarabhed Staggering or obstructed voice indicates which aggravates during night and alleviates during the day.

4. Sannipatik swarabhed is caused by vitiation of all three doshas and therefore have mixed characteristics.

5. Medoj swarabhed caused by the vitiation of meda dhatu (fat tissue) has similar features like kaphaj swarabhed but patients also experience excessive thirst. 

Symptoms:

vocal cords swelling causes distortion of the sounds produced by air passing over them. As a result, voice sounds hoarse. In some cases voice can become almost undetectable.

  • Spasmodic cough
  • Fever in some cases
  • Difficulty in swallowing
  • Swollen lymph nodes
  • Change in voice or loss of voice
  • Pain in throat
  • Irritation of the throat

Causes:

Laryngitis is an inflammation of vocal cords (larynx) causes from overuse, irritation or infection. Chronic laryngitis can cause vocal cord strain and injuries or growths on the vocal cords (polyps or nodules). These injuries can be caused by Inhaled irritants, such as chemical fumes, allergens or smoke,Acid reflux, also called gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD),Chronic sinusitis,Excessive alcohol use while in some cases other respiratory diseases, such as influenza, bronchitis, pneumonia, tuberculosis and common cold can cause chronic laryngitis.

Ayurvedic Medicine for Fever, Diet & Lifestyle:

Some self-care methods may relieve the symptoms of laryngitis and reduce strain on voice:

  • Warm water gargles with sudh tankan bhasma and sfatika bhasma
  •  Avoid talking or singing too loudly or for too long. If you need to speak before large groups, try to use a microphone or megaphone, decongestants and whispering.
  • Drink plenty of fluids to prevent dehydration (avoid alcohol and caffeine).
  • Try sucking on lozenges, gargling with salt water or chewing a piece of gum to moisten throat.
  • Avoid eating spicy foods can cause stomach acid to move into the throat or esophagus, causing heartburn or gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD).
  • Include whole grains, fruits and vegetables contain vitamins A, E and C, and help keep the mucus membranes that line the throat healthy in your diet.
  • Wash your hands often, and avoid contact with people who have upper respiratory infections such as colds.

Home Remedy:
  • Boil ½ to 1 teaspoon full of liquorice (coarse powder) in 1 glass of water, filter and consume warm or If liquorice is boiled until half water is reduced, it provides better results.
