3.Rheumatoid Arthritis (Amavata)

Rheumatoid arthritis is a chronic inflammatory disorder that can affect more than just your joints as well as in other organs in the body systems, including the skin, eyes, lungs, heart and blood vessels. In ayurveda, Rheumatoid arthritis is known as Amavata. It is autoimmune disease that occur When the bodys tissues are mistakenly attacked by their own immune system.

The main difference between osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis is the cause behind the joint symptoms.osteoarthritis is caused by the wear-and-tear damage on joints, rheumatoid arthritis affects the lining of your joints, causing a painful swelling that can eventually result in bone erosion and joint deformity.

Improper food habits and sedentary lifestyle can lead to impairment of digestive fire, formation of ama and vitiation of Vata then this aggravated Vata circulates ama in the channels of the body and deposits it in the joints, causing Amavata.

People with rheumatoid arthritis often have an elevated erythrocyte sedimentation rate or C-reactive protein (CRP), which may indicate the presence of an inflammatory process in the body

Symptoms:
  • Tender, warm, swollen joints
  • Joint stiffness that is usually worse in the mornings and after inactivity
  • Fatigue, fever and weight loss
  • Heaviness in the body

Smaller joints first like fingers of hands and toes affect in rheumatoid arthritis .As the disease progresses, symptoms often spread to the wrists, knees, ankles, elbows, hips and shoulders.In most case, Rheumatoid arthritis presented in the same joints on both sides of your body.

Causes:

Increased intake of indigestible, heavy and incompatible foods; having food at improper times; indigestion; intake of milk and milk products, especially yogurt; intake of meat of aquatic animals; lack of physical activity or doing exercise after having fatty foods are some of the common causes of Rheumatoid Arthritis.

Ayurvedic Medicine for Fever, Diet & Lifestyle:
  • Avoid Obesity- when especially in women diagnosed with the disease when they were 55 or younger
  • Increase intake of barley flour, horse gram , split green gram, honey, celery seeds, cumin seeds, dried ginger root powder, garlic, bitter gourd and castor oil.
  • Avoid an improper diet, lifestyle taking cold shower immediately after exposure to hot sun, sitting in AC for prolonged hours, Sedentary lifestyle suppressing natural urges of the body, smoking and environmental exposures.
  • Avoid Agnimandya food like heavy food, stale food, junk, deep fried or frozen and processed food. Over eating, eating food at irregular times, late night dinner, etc.
  • Avoid Viruddha ahara (Incorrect Diet) – Consuming foods having opposite qualities at a time like drinking ice cold water while having hot meals, eating fish along with milk, etc.

Home Remedy:
  • Agni deepana and ama pachanaherbal medicines are administered to improve the digestive fire,prevent further formation of ama  and reduce pain and joint inflammation.Panchakarma massage therapies are quite useful in subsiding pain in Arthritic patients.
